NATO ships strengthen ties with Baltic Allies during port visit to Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark – Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) reinforced NATO’s cooperation and military ties with Denmark during a port visit to Copenhagen between February 21 – 24. The visit included high-level engagements, operational milestones, and cultural experiences for the crew in one of Europe’s historic naval cities.
Ahead of this visit, SNMG1 hosted the Commander of NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), Royal Navy Vice Admiral Mike Utley, at sea on board the flagship HNLMS Tromp. Also hosted was the Deputy Commander of CTF Baltic, Polish Navy Commodore Piotr Nieć. This joint visit highlighted the strategic importance of SNMG1’s role in regional security, showcasing NATO’s continued focus on strengthening maritime defence and cooperation in the Baltic Sea.

During the port visit to Copenhagen, the crew of HNLMS Tromp welcomed the Dutch Ambassador to Denmark, Nienke Trooster. This meeting underscored the strong diplomatic ties between the Netherlands and Denmark, as well as their shared commitment to NATO’s Baltic Sentry Mission.

While in port, Belgian ship BNS Louise-Marie and French ship FS Jacoubet officially joined the task group, alongside FGS Magdeburg and HNLMS Tromp. The integration of these vessels enhances NATO’s readiness and interoperability, reinforcing the Alliance’s ability to safeguard key maritime routes.

Beyond operational engagements, the crews enjoyed the rich history and culture of Copenhagen, a city with deep naval traditions. This well-earned break allowed sailors to immerse themselves in Danish heritage, while further strengthening the bonds between NATO personnel of different Allied nations.

Following this port visit, FGS Magdeburg and FS Jacoubet will stay in the region to focus on Baltic Sentry, while HNLMS Tromp and BNS Louise-Marie will travel north to take part in Exercise Joint Viking, where they will be joined by French ship FS Somme.

SNMG1 is one of the four Standing Naval Forces that provide security across the NATO area of responsibility. They are the core of NATO's high readiness maritime capabilities, carrying out NATO missions across the full spectrum of operations, ready to respond to any task at any time.
