NATO ships make a port visit to Poland during Baltic Sentry

Baltic Sea – Standing Nato Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) has conducted a port visit to Gdansk, Poland. The group is participating in the mission Baltic Sentry, NATO’s mission to enhance its military presence in the Baltic Sea with an emphasis on monitoring Critical Undersea Infrastructure (CUI).

The Task Group consists of HNLMS Tromp as Flagship, FGS Magdeburg and FNS Pori, the latter staying at sea for operational reasons. This port visit strengthened military and diplomatic relationships between NATO Allies.

Led by the Commander of SNMG1, Royal Netherlands Navy Commodore Arjen Warnaar, the visit began with a reception on board HNLMS Tromp. Hosted by Commodore Warnaar and the Dutch Ambassador in Poland Jennes de Mol, it was attended by key military and civil members of the nearby community. They were joined by commercial representatives of the maritime industry, including those focused on critical undersea infrastructure. The reception was a good opportunity to strengthen the relationships so valuable to the success of Baltic Sentry.

During the week, Commodore Warnaar was also invited to visit the Polish Maritime Operational Centre. Here he had the opportunity to meet with several Polish Navy officials, including the commander of the Polish MOC, Vice Admiral Krysztof Jaworski. The Commodore was briefed on the latest maritime developments in the Gulf of Gdansk and the Baltic Sea. He also held productive discussions with Admiral Jaworski on shared security challenges and how SNMG1 can further support Allies within the Baltic Region.

Commander Standing Nato Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), Commodore Warnaar (NLD N) had the opportunity to meet Vice Admiral Krysztof Jaworski, Commander of the Polish Maritime Operational Centre and his staff, to discuss the latest maritime developments in the Gulf of Gdansk and the Baltic Sea.

In the addition to official engagements, the crew of HNLMS Tromp had the opportunity to visit the nearby Strutthof Concentration camp. Here they were able to pay their respects to the victims of World War 2. This visit emphasised the importance of remembrance and the standing commitment to stability and peace throughout Europe.

Commodore Warnaar looked back on a successful visit to Gdansk, saying he’s very grateful for the warm welcome from our Polish Allies. “I am very happy to be here and deeply grateful for your kind hospitality. It is inspiring to see your commitment to peace and the dedication with which you work to preserve it. Let us continue to seek out opportunities to strengthen our cooperation so we can grow stronger together!”
