Rome, ITALY. The EU Naval Forces Mediterranean Command (EUNAVFOR MED) and NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) co-organized the “Shared Awareness and De-confliction in the Mediterranean” (SHADE MED) Conference December 5 in Rome to discuss ways to enhance maritime security throughout the region.

The 13th edition of the annual conference focused on addressing the “Future Challenges in the Mediterranean.” The conference serves as a crucial platform to connect international experts, government representatives and military leaders to discuss common challenges and emerging threats.

Our presence at the SHADE MED conference highlights the important roles that both NATO and the EU play in the Mediterranean Sea and our shared security challenges in the maritime domain

“Our presence at the SHADE MED conference highlights the important roles that both NATO and the EU play in the Mediterranean Sea and our shared security challenges in the maritime domain,” said Vice Admiral Didier Maleterre, Deputy Commander Allied Maritime Command. “The discussions during this conference were critical with regards to the current strategic context, in Eastern Europe as in the Middle East and North Africa.”

The conference featured a series of speakers and panels with leading experts from academia, the diplomatic community, the shipping community, and military leaders who focused on ways to collectively address the core issues affecting maritime security in the Mediterranean.

The conference not only reflected the EU's and NATO’s commitment to addressing regional complexities; it also highlights the significance of partnerships and collective action to enhance peace and stability of the Mediterranean region.

“SHADE MED is an open forum bridging three continents from North to South and East to West,” said Rear Admiral Valentino Rinaldi, Operation Commander of EUNAVFOR MED. “It is an exemplary venue for bringing the EU and NATO together and an outstanding venue for sharing awareness and great tool for multilateral engagement”.
