Operation Sea Guardian completes successful patrols in the Eastern Mediterranean

SOUDA NAVAL BASE, Greece – A NATO task group led by the flagship frigate HS Aegean completed a three-week patrol in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea as part of NATO's Operation Sea Guardian (OSG). This is the fifth focused operations (FOCOPS) conducted this year as part of OSG.

During the three-week patrol, HS Aegean conducted Maritime Situational Awareness activities engaging with merchant and fishing vessels, as well as other transiting ships, providing reassurance to local mariners and affirming the vital support that NATO provides for the maritime community.

Submarines from the Hellenic and Turkish navies supported the flagship HS Aegean, along with Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Airborne Early Warning aircraft from Greece, Türkiye, and United States. In addition, the NATO Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Force (NISRF) supported the mission.

Our collaborative efforts with Allied forces and partners fortified our collective capabilities and unity, thereby enhancing our proficiency to operate in a challenging maritime environment

“Assuming leadership of a NATO task group presented a profoundly enriching and stimulating experience,” said Captain Vasileios Bouras, Commander of the OSG task group. “Our collaborative efforts with Allied forces and partners fortified our collective capabilities and unity, thereby enhancing our proficiency to operate in a challenging maritime environment. Our solidarity contributes significantly to our collective strength and security.”

NATO's Operation Sea Guardian fifth focused patrols conducted in the Eastern Mediterranean. A Georgian Coast Guard boarding team supported this patrols, embarked on board the flagship, HS Aegean.

A Georgian Coast Guard boarding team embarked on the flagship to enhance interoperability and provide an integral capability for the task group. Georgia is an operational partner to NATO’s Operation Sea Guardian and its contribution underscores Georgia’s support for Euro-Atlantic security.

NATO’s Operation Sea Guardian enhances situational awareness throughout the Mediterranean Sea by identifying threats to maritime security and monitoring potential criminal activities that could support terrorism.

OSG task groups operate under the command and control of NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM). MARCOM serves as the central point for sharing maritime security information within the Alliance.
