NATO, Baltic nations discuss Critical Undersea Infrastructure security during Baltic Commanders Conference

NORTHWOOD, United Kingdom – NATO’s maritime military leaders joined the commanders of the navies of countries bordering the Baltic Sea for the Baltic Commanders Conference 2024 in Vihula, Estonia, March 4-6.

The conference focused on working together to ensure the security of the critical underwater infrastructure (CUI) in the Baltic Sea region.

"The purpose of the event is to bring representatives of the navies to the same table to jointly find answers to the most burning questions of our region based on the experiences of individual countries," said Commander of the Estonian Navy Commodore Jüri Saska.

Commander, Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) Vice Admiral Mike Utley and members of NATO’s Critical Underwater Infrastructure Centre joined representatives of the navies of eight countries – Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden for the three-day conference, which was hosted by the Estonian Navy.

Utley shared NATO’s strategic view on enhancing the security of CUI within the Alliance during discussions while national representatives provided updates from their countries’ perspectives.

An initiative spearheaded by the German Navy, the Baltic Commanders Conference began in 2015 and is hosted by participating nations on a rotational basis.

MARCOM is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the MARCOM Commander is the primary maritime advisor to the Alliance.
