NORTHWOOD, United Kingdom – NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) held the sixth annual “Maritime Security Symposium” at its Northwood HQ on 12 December 24.

Attended by more than forty representatives from various sectors of the shipping industry and 14 NATO nations, the symposium was an important networking opportunity between the shipping industry and MARCOM staff.

NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) hosted the sixth annual Maritime Security Symposium in Northwood, UK. NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) with 14 NATO nations and representatives from various sectors of the shipping industry discussed current security challenges.

In his opening remarks, MARCOM’s Deputy Chief of Staff Operations, German Rear Admiral Stefan Pauly provided an overview about the importance of the symposium in bringing together leaders from the shipping community and naval staff to discuss shared challenges in the maritime domain.

“The Maritime Security Symposium provides an important venue that brings together leaders and executives from NATO and the merchant shipping community to discuss maritime security challenges in the Euro-Atlantic region,” said Rear Admiral Pauly. “The discussions during the symposium will enhance the ability of MARCOM and the NATO Shipping Centre to coordinate and share information vital to the security of commercial shipping and our sea lines of communication.”

Hosting the event allowed MARCOM to bring together shipping industry professionals from Allied nations, fostering wider comprehensive understanding and promoting collaboration on a range of topics.

The NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) is the link between NATO and the merchant shipping community. Permanently manned by NATO, the NSC is the primary point of contact for the exchange of merchant shipping information between NATO's military authorities and the international shipping community.

Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the MARCOM Commander is the primary maritime advisor to the Alliance.
