NATO Allied Maritime Command tests readiness, joint multi-domain support during Exercise Steadfast Jupiter 23

NORTHWOOD, United Kingdom – Personnel from NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) joined nearly 7,000 military and civilian personnel across multiple warfare domains in 27 headquarters in Europe and North America for Exercise Steadfast Jupiter 23 from Oct. 10 to 19.

Scheduled by Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and directed by the Joint Warfare Center (JWC), Steadfast Jupiter is designed to strengthen low- and high-intensity warfighting skillsets of the NATO Command and Force Structure headquarters.

The strength of NATO’s joint forces stems from our ability to work together toward common goals across every warfare domain, the capability that MARCOM delivers within and from the maritime domain goes hand-in-hand with our land, air, SOF, cyber, and space counterparts and is designed to defend every inch of Alliance territory. Steadfast Jupiter exercised the new DDA plans, enabled my team to streamline processes, and solidified relationships and our Allied military readiness

The exercise used a multi-domain, multi joint operational area scenario to test NATO’s responsiveness, command and control, and defence posture in a challenging, multi-threat environment based on a simulated Article 5 crisis situation. The exercise focused on collective defence across the spectrum of NATO’s 360-degree approach to security.

“The strength of NATO’s joint forces stems from our ability to work together toward common goals across every warfare domain,” Commander, Allied Maritime Command, Vice Admiral Mike Utley said. “The capability that MARCOM delivers within and from the maritime domain goes hand-in-hand with our land, air, SOF, cyber, and space counterparts and is designed to defend every inch of Alliance territory. Steadfast Jupiter exercised the new DDA plans, enabled my team to streamline processes, and solidified relationships and our Allied military readiness.”

From the maritime perspective, Steadfast Jupiter incorporated the Italian Maritime Force, which is designated NATO Response Force (Maritime) for 2024, in addition to personnel from MARCOM Headquarters.

Steadfast Jupiter is NATO’s largest biennial computer-assisted, command-post exercise. It is the prequel to NATO’s major live exercise Steadfast Defender, scheduled next year.

MARCOM is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the MARCOM commander is the primary maritime advisor to the Alliance. Like its land and air counterparts (LANDCOM and AIRCOM), MARCOM supports the Joint Force Commands and stands ready to defend the Alliance and its interests.
