NATO's Operation Sea Guardian Patrols in Western Mediterranean

MEDITERRANEAN SEA – Spanish offshore patrol vessel ESPS Tornado set sail as flagship to NATO's Operation Sea Guardian (OSG) for focused security patrol in the Western Mediterranean from 21 to 30 June 2021. The Task Group under the command of Lieutenant Commander Alberto Sanchéz Expósito (Spanish Navy) is supported by the Portuguese submarine NRP Tridente, Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) from Italy, Portugal and Spain, and Airborne Early Warning aircraft from Turkey.

These assets operate to gather shipping pattern-of-life information, to observe maritime traffic, identify any suspicious activity at sea, and provide information to improve the understanding of maritime activities within this area of the Mediterranean. Information collection helps to create a comprehensive maritime picture. These information products are reported back to the Allied Maritime Command based in Northwood (UK), the hub of maritime security information sharing for the NATO Alliance.

ESPS Tornado will visit Algeria, followed by a passing exercise with the Algerian Navy. During the port visit, both sides will explore their operational knowledge and exchange mutual experiences while observing Covid-19 precautionary measures. With OSG, NATO is committed to work with partner Nations exploring new training opportunities to improve interoperability and flexibility readiness in the maritime domain, and thus contribute to Regional Maritime Security Capacity Building in the region.

In addition this month, Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 have patrolled the Western Mediterranean in associated support to NATO's Operation Sea Guardian. These patrols included the execution of maritime situational awareness activities to provide NATO presence in the area while ensuring security and peace throughout the maritime commons.
