Royal visit to Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Her Royal Highness Princess Marie-Esméralda of Belgium, accompanied by her spouse Sir Salvador Moncada, and other high-profile diplomats visited the Belgian Minehunter Bellis, currently assigned to Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1) during group’s port visit to Copenhagen on Monday, March 10, 2020.

Belgian royals were accompanied by the former UN Special Envoy for Syria, diplomat Staffan de Mistura and the Belgian Ambassador to Denmark, His Excellency Leo Peeters.

The Princess and the distinguished guests were briefed on Naval Mine Warfare in general and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One mission in particular. The visit occurred before the group’s departure from Copenhagen. On departure The Princess and her company were picked up by the Royal Danish chaloupe after unmooring and taken back ashore.

It was a big honour for me and my crew to welcome Her Royal Highness, her spouse, the former UN Special Envoy to Syria and our Ambassador, and especially to have them embarked while leaving the port of Copenhagen” said the Commanding Officer of the Belgian Minehunter BNS Bellis, Lieutenant Commander Nicolas Doyen on the occasion.

Before the port visit to Copenhagen, the SNMCMG1 participated in Historical Ordinance Disposal operations in the Oslo Fjord. The NATO Group was composed by the flagship, German replenishment ship Donau, the Belgium minehunter Bellis, the Royal Norwegian minehunter Otra, the Royal Netherlands minehunter Willemstad and Royal Navy minehunter Grimsby.
