Operation Sea Guardian receives support from Standing NATO Maritime Group 2

MEDITERRANEAN SEA – Last week the Greek frigate HS Salamis and the Portuguese frigate NRP Bartolomeu Dias, currently deployed to NATO’s Operation Sea Guardian, completed their first replenishment at sea (RAS) with Spanish Tanker ESPS Patino, deployed with Standing NATO Maritime Group Two, Task Unit 02 (SNMG2 TU02).

This event demonstrates the agility and complementarity of NATO maritime operations led from the Allied Maritime Command Headquarters in Northwood, UK.

Operation Sea Guardian is currently being conducted by Greek frigate HS Salamis, Portuguese frigate NRP Bartolomeu Dias, Italian frigate ITS Euro and Turkish frigate TCG Gemlik.

The RAS is a normal but delicate operation which requires a close coordination between the involved ships. HS Salamis and NRP Bartolomeu Dias steamed at a close, but safe distance alongside Patino enabling a successful transfer of the fuel lines and other stores.

Conducting a RAS means that Operation Sea Guardian warships can continue on station and avoid an operational pause to conduct a port visit for replenishment. Refuelling at sea means more operational time supporting security of the shipping lanes in the Mediterranean.
