Standing NATO Maritime Group ONE Visits Riga

RIGA, Latvia – At the end of last week, Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), under the command of Rear Admiral Jose Enrique Delgado, ESP Navy, visited Riga for a scheduled port visit during the group’s deployment to the North and Baltic Seas to demonstrate the Alliance’s solidarity and cohesion in the region.

SNMG1 is currently composed of three ships: the Spanish F100 class frigate ESPS ALVARO de BAZAN (F101), as flagship, the UK Type 23 Frigate HMS IRON DUKE (F234) and the Spanish Combat Replenishment Ship ESPS CANTABRIA (A15).

Prior to the visit the group has conducted advance exercises in the Baltic Sea, interacting with regional navies and air forces, enhancing the Group´s readiness and interoperability with other units.

"This Group´s first visit to Riga this year will provide SNMG1 occasions to engage with local authorities and will allow our crews to enjoy the historical and cultural offerings in this most welcomed visit to Latvia,” Rear Admiral Delgado said on the occasion. "SNMG1 will continue to seek cooperation and exercising opportunities with our NATO Allies in the Baltic.”

SNMG1 ships were open to the public, providing the possibility for a guided visit with several demonstrations on the different on board capabilities.
