SNMG2 Task Unit Begins Operations in the Black Sea

BLACK SEA – HMCS FREDERICTON, assigned to Standing NATO Maritime Group Two Task Unit 02 (SNMG2 TU.02) arrived yesterday in the Black Sea as part of a regularly scheduled deployment.

HMCS FREDERICTON is in the Black Sea to reassure allies in the region of the Alliance’s collective defence. Additionally, HMCS FREDERICTON will operate and train with ships from the Bulgarian, Romanian and Turkish Navies in simulated anti-air and anti-submarine warfare exercises as well as simulated small boat attacks and basic ship handling manoeuvres.

SNMG2 TU.02 led by HMCS FREDERICTON Commanding Officer, Commander Trevor Maclean, will integrate the Romanian frigate ROS REGINA MARIA. The ships will remain under the overall command of SNMG2 Commander, Rear Admiral Jörg Klein (GER) reflecting NATO’s capability to operate in dynamic maritime domains.

"The partnerships we have in the region are extremely valuable to NATO, and the value of the multinational training we will conduct with our Allies Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey is essential to maintain the maritime interoperability of the Alliance,” said Vice Admiral Bruno Paulmier, Deputy Commander, Allied Maritime Command.

Following the completion of the deployment to Black Sea SNMG2 TU.02 will rejoin the other ships of SNMG2, contributing to their current activities and maritime situational awareness.
