Standing NATO Maritime Group ONE departed Lisbon to support NATO’s counter-terrorism Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR

Lisbon, PORTUGAL – Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) led by Rear Admiral Alberto Correia, Portuguese Navy, resumed NATO’s counter-terrorism Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR (OAE) this week. SNMG1 currently consists of the Flagship - Portuguese frigate NRP D. FRANCISCO DE ALMEIDA, the Spanish frigate ESPS BLAS DE LEZO, the Norwegian frigate HNOMS FRIDTJOF NANSEN and the Canadian frigate HMCS WINNIPEG.

After participating in TRIDENT JUNCTURE 2015, the largest NATO exercise in 13 years, the group performed a short port visit to Lisbon before returning to the Mediterranean and commencing a counter-terrorism mission under NATO’s Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR. During OAE, the main task for SNMG1 is to monitor shipping lanes and check suspicious ships, contributing to the security of the region.

"Participation in OAE is very important to enhance security of the seas, especially as Allies are facing multi-faceted terrorist threats,” said Rear Admiral Alberto Correia, Commander SNMG1.  "This high readiness Force is fully prepared and capable of operating in a complex environment, resuming our presence in this particular area of operations, to help deter, defend, disrupt and protect against terrorism.”
