Favinha was born in Lisbon, Portugal on 11th April 1963.
He graduated at the Naval Academy in 1986 and his first assignment was on NRP João Roby.
He specialized in communications, electronic warfare and tactical action officer, and served in this condition on corvette NRP João Roby and frigate NRP Corte Real. During the commission on board the frigate he was engaged on the naval embargo against the former Yugoslavia in 1996.
He lectured electronic warfare at the Communications School and was the Harbour Master of Porto Santo as well the Director of the Porto Santo Naval Radio Station.
In 1998, he was assigned to the NATO Regional Headquarters South Atlantic, as surface and electronic warfare staff officer.
Commodore Favinha has commanded NRP João Roby between 2001 and 2003.
He was the Deputy Commander of Patrol Boat Squadron and while in this assignment, he performed, additionally, the duty of Chief of Staff, afloat, of the Portuguese Navy Task Group. Next, he was the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations of the Portuguese Navy Fleet.
Between 2007 and 2010, he served again in NATO as Head of Coordination of Scientific Programme of Work Branch and later the Command and Control Comprehensive Approach Branch in the Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia.
He was the director of the Portuguese Fleet Training and Evaluation Centre during five years and commanded the Portuguese Navy Task Group during two.
Promoted to Commodore in October 2016, he took over the duties of Deputy Chief of Staff Plans at MARCOM, on the 11th of November 2016.
He was awarded with three Distinguish Service Silver medal, the Military Merit medal, three Navy Cross and the NATO's medals.
