Commander Aleksander Urbanowicz was born on December 12, 1977 in Gdansk. In 2000 he graduated from the Polish Naval Academy - Faculty of Navigation and Naval Weapons. After graduating from the Academy he started his service in 12th Minesweeper’s Squadron in Świnoujście (western Polish coast) where he took the responsibilities as the commander of the department of underwater warfare and artillery on ORP DABIE.

Three years later he became the executive officer of the group of ships on board ORP GARDNO, and later the commanding officer of the minesweeper ORP DRUŻNO. In the meantime, in 2004, he defended his second degree studies dissertation in hydrographic survey and navigational marking.

In 2007, again in the Polish Naval Academy, he began postgraduate studies, specializing in commanding naval forces. After graduation he became the Commander of the 1st Minesweepers group and concomitantly took the command of the ORP GARDNO. After three years, he became the chief of staff of the 12th MCM Division, and after a while, was appointed to the post of deputy commander of this Squadron. In November, he was appointed head of hydrography in the 8th Costal Defence Flotilla.

Commander Urbanowicz as the Commanding Officer and commander of MCM forces participated in many exercises, both national and international, such as BALTOPS and ANACONDA. For a year, he was also in charge of the Naval Task Force of 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, consisting of MCM, amphibious, transport, supply and auxiliary forces.

Commander Urbanowicz is a graduate of the Belgian-Dutch EGUERMIN Naval Mine Warfare School. He also completed numerous special domestic and international courses, including the NATO Naval Operations Training Center in Greece, improvement courses in planning and carrying out MCM operations in Belgium, courses on Force Protection at the Polish Military University of Technology and the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany. This year he also completed staff officers and commanders’ courses in Belgium.

Commander Aleksander Urbanowicz is married to Paulina and has two kids: daughter Maja and son Aleksander.
